My certificate for completing military service For those outside Taiwan: military service is mandatory here, and alternative service (替代役) places eligible conscripts in civilian public-sector roles instead of the armed forces. Mine made me an administrative assistant in the Student Affairs Office of a Taipei junior high school, mostly running its hygiene division. The strange part was the identity shift — not long ago I was a student in a classroom; almost overnight, I was the person on the other side of the desk. And from that side, small things looked different. As a student, I’d grumbled about unfair cleaning-zone assignments like everyone else; as staff, I learned that assigning them well means weighing floor area, foot traffic, layout, and headcount. So I re-inventoried every zone and redesigned the allocation, and cleanliness measurably improved the next semester. I also replaced the slow, handwritten inspection forms with a QR-code system — staff log issues and photos from their phones, and homeroom teachers scan a code to see what’s wrong and where. It ran school-wide all year and is open-sourced as bjjh-cleaning on GitHub. I was fortunate to have that work recognized with a national commendation for outstanding alternative service. ...
